As we celebrate National Tree Week 2025, join us on Saturday, 8th March at 11am for Tree Planting at Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park and Lakeside Cafe.
National Tree Week is an annual event organised by the Tree Council of Ireland in partnership with Coillte. It is the largest tree celebration in the country, providing a unique opportunity for people to come together and celebrate the beauty and importance of Ireland’s trees!
Trees are a great store of carbon, with around 50% of a tree’s dry mass being composed of carbon. The soil under a tree is full of carbon too, as the fallen leaves, twigs and branches break down and some of their carbon is stored in the soil.
The knock-on effects are that smaller shrubs, bushes and flowers will also grow underneath our trees and soak up carbon and add more to the soil. Trees are also important to our bird life. Most chicks require insects to eat which cannot generally be found at a bird table. Trees are home to a variety of earwigs, spiders, caterpillars, beetles, moths and other invertebrates. Trees also create an invisible fungal network under the soil called the Wood Wide Web, where they have a symbiotic relationship with fungi (mushrooms). This web allows them to pass nutrients and water to each other and other plants.
When we plant native trees, we provide natural habitats and food sources to our native birds and other mammals. While trees sequester (store) carbon, they also play a vital role in storing water, helping to prevent flooding. They are the great recyclers, recycling nutrients or themselves and other plants in their ecosystems.
This years theme is “Planting Trees, Growing Together” aims to emphasise the importance of trees and forests in helping to mitigate climate change and promote biodiversity. Dive into the world of Trees and Sustainable Planting with our expert ecologists at Tralee Bay Wetlands.
